The Reflex -Three Defining Prince Cuts
The Reflex, aka Nicolas Laugier, is a French-born DJ who has garnered a reputation for tastefully remixing some of soul and disco music's very finest works. From Earth, Wind and Fire to Marvin Gaye and Nina Simone, The Reflex has been twisting and tweaking some of the world's most recognisable tracks, priming them with a powerful floor-ready punch. Alongside Chantelle Nandi's 11-piece live band and The Good Life DJs, Nicolas will be drawing his own supremely funky selections, plus a handful of never-before-heard Prince edits for our Purple Reign - A Tribute To Prince party this Friday. Ahead of this we sat down with The Reflex to take us through three choice cuts from the Purple One's formidable back catalogue.
A Prince track you'd most like to have witnessed live?
The Bangles - Manic Monday
"Well, I kinda did witness this live. I went to the first night of Prince’s residency at the O2 (I went three times actually). He played for 2h30 and then disappeared. Most of the people left, but 30 minutes later he came back and treated the remaining crowd to 40 minutes of just him and his guitar - and he played Manic Monday! That was super cool."
[Though released by The Bangles, Prince wrote 'Manic Monday' under the pseudonym of 'Christopher' in 1984. The track was originally intended for the 80's trio Apollonia 6, for which Prince recorded a demo which can be found below.]
A hidden gem or B-side that you’re excited to pack for May 4th…
All Day, All Night [Live & Unreleased]
"The 1984 live version of All Day, All Night, recorded on his birthday, which is the very best version of all that exist. Sorry but it’s not on Youtube."
[The track in question can be found here, at the 15-minute mark.]
And finally, a track that you’d never dream of editing and why?
Prince - Kiss Me Quick [Unreleased]
"As you may know, most of what I remix comes from the multitracks, so until they become available all that is possible really is to extend a few bits here and there. That's what I did on this rare early cut which I love but was quite short. Thankfully my own file is much better sounding that this poor quality Youtube upload."
Join us and The Reflex on Friday 4th May for Purple Reign, when Oval Space transforms into a immersive emporium of Prince trademarks and motifs, the final few tickets remain here.
